Why does the astrological sign matter?
The astrological sign gives you an idea of the theme for that lunation. There are certain topics each moon brings. They are typically tied to the characteristics of the astrological sign the moon falls in. Today’s New Moon is in the sign of Capricorn. So we’ll use this as an example. What we know about the characteristics of the sign Capricorn: culturally it signals dedication, commitment, work ethic, climbing heights, practicality, achievement, and finding pleasure in the struggle for greatness. You may have also heard the term ‘responsibility’ used to describe a capricorn sun sign person. Their discipline and ambition cannot be outranked. The shadow side of this astrological sign can also reflect extremes such as pessimistic realism, workaholism, unforgiving honesty, overly cautious, and incredibly high standards.
All signs have lightness and darkness within them. All. signs. have. light. and. dark. within. them. Just like people, to be human is to be flawed, and still be loved. And so we need to be cautious to not use these characteristics to stereotype people based upon astrological signs, because the truth is all of these astrological signs are found within our own chart, in some way or another. Labels and organization methods are helpful, but can turn harmful when we typify through oversimplification. The astrological emphasis where the moon falls, can give us information about which themes to focus on in our life at that time of year. This is why I included the astrological sign next to each full and new moon in this guide.
Astrology and New Moons
A new moon in the sign of Capricorn would be a great time to take any creative desires and start building a practical plan to implement those passionate ideas into reality. Imagine having a vision and drive to write a book, but you feel mortified when you just start to write it because it’s so overwhelming. The New Moon in Capricorn would say, “let’s make a practical plan”. You’re not going to sit down and write the perfect book from cover to cover. Let’s get a process going, and allow some flexibility so you’re not intimidated by the mountain of work ahead. Put together resources, classes, support mechanisms for accountability. Ensure you have the proper software for the style of writing you are going for. And begin making that beautiful piece of literary art you are dreaming of with confidence and realism! New Moon in Capricorn says ‘your dream will only be good enough for you, if you allow quality to lead the way, versus quantity’. It says lets make this journey digestible and harmonious.
Astrology and Full moons
An example of a full moon that occurs in the sign of Capricorn. This would be a good time to release unrealistic expectations, adjust schema, or illuminate roadblocks that you are not dealing with appropriately. Have you ever tried to unscrew a flathead screw with a philips head screwdriver? Sometimes we haven’t learned that we’re working with the wrong schema or the wrong tools, until we’ve gotten into the thick of things. This is where a pivot is required.
Emotions can run deep and teach us much during a full moon. The term ‘luna-cy’ was historically used to refer to folks who were experiencing mental episodes during the full moon. Most were considered overcommitted to something unrealistic, stubborn naivety. A cleanse of expectations that were tied to the original plan is needed around a full moon. Flexibility is favored and rewarded during this type of lunation.
Your Birth Moon
If you know your ‘big three’ in astrology, this means you are aware of your natal chart’s sun sign, your moon sign, and your rising or ascending sign. You essentially know where the stars were on the day of your birth. When it comes to lunar cycles, anytime the moon enters the same astrological sign that your birth moon was in, this is a great time for you personally to work on things as well.
For example, my birth moon is in the sign of Leo. A very showy, leader based, playful sign. Whenever the moon passes into the sign of Leo (which is once per month), I use that time to wear something bolder than usual that makes me feel beautiful, I’m not afraid to toot my horn a bit, and it makes me happy to stand up in front of others to lead or teach. Most of the time I’m quite an introvert (I’m a double scorpio). And I have trauma around narcissistic abuse, which makes putting myself out there even more difficult. But I have worked on my own social anxiety historically, by exploring new things aligned with the energy of that moon in Leo. This is not to say astrology is a substitute for therapy, oh goodness NO. It has really helped me understand a lot about me, as well as overcome a lot in my own emotional healing sphere and journey! The personal is powerful.
If you don’t know what your astrology chart looks like, and if you missed my intro class on it last fall, you can always feel free to book a birth chart reading with me.
Anyways, I hope that 2024 brings you so much joy and peace. I truly mean it. We all deserve it. And I hope this guide helps you to get started on your journey towards moonwork.
